Prenatal Henna

Belly henna and blessingway designs for baby showers and mother blessings across Connecticut.

Belly henna marks a pregnancy in a way a photograph on its own cannot. A design across the bump takes around forty-five minutes to an hour, and the resulting stain lasts one to two weeks, which is plenty of time for a maternity shoot. Most people book it for the third trimester, when the bump is at its fullest and the design sits best.

Traditional prenatal designs centre on symbols of protection, growth and fertility: lotus flowers, mandalas, vines and the tree of life. We will happily work in anything meaningful to you, whether that is a cultural motif, the baby's initial or something drawn from your own family traditions.

Belly henna is often the centrepiece of a baby shower or blessingway, with the mother's design drawn first and guests having smaller designs on their hands afterwards. We are happy to work that way, or to come to a quiet private appointment if you would rather have the time to yourself.

How it works

  1. Get in touch

Tell us your due date and when you would like the henna. Third trimester is the usual window, and around a week before a maternity shoot works well.

  2. Choose the design

We talk through symbols and style, and whether you want a centred mandala, a design that wraps around the bump, or something asymmetric.

  3. The sitting

Around 45 to 60 minutes, sitting or reclining comfortably. You will need to stay still while the paste sets, so it is a good chance to put your feet up.

  4. Aftercare

Leave the paste on for at least two to four hours. The colour keeps deepening for another day or two after it comes off.
